Covid Scotland: Edinburgh records more than 400 new cases overnight

Scotland has recorded 10 coronavirus deaths and 2,538 new cases in the past 24 hours, the latest Scottish Government figures show.

It brings the death toll under the daily measure - of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days - to 8,051.

NHS Lothian has returned 429 newly-confirmed infections in the latest reporting period - with 275 in Edinburgh alone.

The daily test positivity rate is 7.5 per cent, down from 10.6 per cent the previous day.

A total of 324 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed covid-19, down 14 on the previous day, with 39 patients in intensive care, down one.

West Lothian accounted for 72 new cases, while East Lothian returned 43 and Midlothian 38.

The government's death figures differ from the earlier National Records of Scotland tally, as the higher NRS weekly figure include suspected or probable cases of covid-19.

Over 16,000 people received the second dose of their vaccine over the 24-hour period, bringing the total fully vaccinated up to almost 3.5 million.

Around four million people have had the first dose of their jag, covering over 90 per cent of the population.
