Covid Scotland: Edinburgh on track for level two restrictions as lockdown eases

Edinburgh is among the local authorities in Scotland that are on track for level two Covid restrictions, according to the latest data.

All but one Scottish council have now met a key benchmark for the further easing of Covid restrictions, the BBC reported.

Last week every local authority briefly averaged fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 population, which is one of the requirements for moving to level two lockdown under Scottish Government guidelines.

The latest data shows that all of all Scotland's local authorities remain in the 1-49 seven-day rate category apart from Moray where a surge of cases took it over this threshold.

The capital's Covid rates remain low along with much of the country, with a seven-day rate per 100,000 of 26.1 - which falls into the second-lowest alert category.

It comes as the next target date for Covid restrictions easing in Scotland approaches, on May 17.

From this date, Scots are set to be given the green light to meet their friends and family inside private homes over the coming weeks. It is expected that four people from two households will be able to socialise indoors at a private home from May 17.

Among the rules being relaxed at this time, alcohol will be permitted inside a hospitality venue until 10.30pm.

A raft of restrictions were already lifted in Scotland last Monday, which saw pubs, restaurants, cafes and bars reopen for the first time in months as rules were relaxed.

Revellers have been making the most of the lockdown easing, with the Grassmarket packed on Friday night for the first time this year.
