Covid Scotland: Edinburgh neighbourhood becomes local hotspot as cases rise

An Edinburgh neighbourhood is showing a higher coronavirus case rate than anywhere else in the city, according to the latest data.

Figures from Public Health Scotland have given a rating to all areas in the capital throughout the pandemic, dependent on the rate of infection.

Currently, most areas in the city are sitting at next to no new cases, however one area has jumped up two rankings in the last week.

Moredun and Craigour has been put into the bracket of 200-399 new cases per 100,000 of population, the second highest rating on the chart.

In a seven day period, the small area of Edinburgh had confirmed seven new cases, which is significantly more than anywhere else in the city in relation to population.

Some places such as Granton, Clermiston and Liberton have reported no new cases over a seven day period, with others such as Colinton and Murihouse sitting in the 100-199 per 100,000 category.

It comes as restrictions in the capital will ease once again on Monday (May 17), as mainland Scotland moves into level two.

This will allow alcohol to be served indoors, people to visit each others homes and social distancing to be scrapped in certain settings.

However, a decision is yet to be made on whether Moray will be kept under level three rules, after a rise in cases and community transmission.

Glasgow is also under close monitoring after cases within the health board took a sudden surge this week.
