Covid Scotland: Edinburgh had second highest number of cases in last five days

The City of Edinburgh has recorded more than 600 new Covid-19 cases in the last five days – the second highest number in the whole of Scotland.

The Scottish capital's figure of 603 is more than the totals recorded in East Lothian, West Lothian, Midlothian and Fife combined.

Figures from Travelling Tabby tracker show that there have been 111 new confirmed positive tests in West Lothian, 98 in East Lothian, 92 in Midlothian and 278 in Fife.

Only Glasgow (913) has more cases than Edinburgh, with the city recording a larger number than the likes of South Lanarkshire, North Lanarkshire, Perth and Kinross, Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and Renfrewshire.

The rate per 100,000 of population is 115, and while this is higher than neighbouring Lothian and Fife areas, it is lower than North Lanarkshire (147), South Lanarkshire (126), Inverclyde (148), Scottish Borders (132), Renfrewshire (148), North Ayrshire (125), Glasgow City (144), East Renfrewshire (139), East Ayrshire (132), Dundee City (153) and Dumfries and Galloway (116).

Edinburgh Live reported earlier this afternoon that Scotland had recorded its highest ever spike in new cases.

1895 new positive cases were confirmed in Tuesday's figures – the first update since before Christmas.

There have also been seven further deaths among people who tested positive in the last 28 days, taking the total death toll in Scotland under that measurement to 4467.

14,179 new tests were carried out and 14.4 per cent of these were positive. 1092 people are in hospital with the virus, and 65 are being treated in intensive care.
