Covid Scotland: Edinburgh data shows deaths rising to alarming levels again

New data shows that Covid-19 deaths are rising in Edinburgh.

The latest information from Public Health Scotland shows that after almost no deaths in the Spring the number of fatalities have began to creep back up close to the levels of last winter in recent months.

Last winter in December, January and February there were over 50 deaths in Edinburgh each month but with the help of the vaccination programme the numbers began to drop.

By April and May there was just one death in each month and in June there were another five fatalities, according to the PHS data tables.

However, with the arrival of the Delta variant the number of Covid-19 related deaths spiked in July to 21 and 20 in August.

And the data shows that in September the number of deaths in Edinburgh jumped up to 30.

So far for the month of October no more deaths have been recorded on the PHS data tables but they can take time to be updated.

The latest National Records of Scotland data reveals that there have been 677 coronavirus related deaths in the capital since the pandemic began.

The news comes as Nicola Sturgeon warned that the station with Covid-19 “remains fragile and potentially very challenging” in Scotland.

The First Minister announced today (October 5) there would be no immediate changes to the remaining Covid-19 restrictions still in place, with Scots still expected to wear face coverings in shops or on public transport.

She said: “In short, it is vital that we all continue to be mindful of the virus and its likely presence around us as we go about our everyday lives – and in light of that, continue to behave in sensible ways that will reduce its ability to spread from person to person”
