Covid Scotland: Edinburgh among areas with highest numbers of coronavirus cases

Some of Scotland's highest numbers of Covid-19 cases can be found in and around Edinburgh.

Despite cases dropping since last week, they are still much higher than they were a month ago and in May.

The City of Edinburgh has the second-highest number of cases in the country, with 2,960 new cases between June 29 and July 5.

This falls just behind Glasgow City's count of 3,111 new cases over the same time period.

According to data from Public Health Scotland, many of the surrounding neighbourhoods around both cities have seven-day rates of over 400.

This comes ahead of the entirety of Scotland heading into Level 0 from July 19 and plans for all restrictions to be lifted on August 9.

The four areas closest to Edinburgh with seven-day rates of more than 400 are East Lothian, Midlothian, Fife, and Perth and Kinross.

Just over the Firth of Forth, Fife has the third-highest number of cases in Scotland, with 1,704 new cases between June 29 and July 5.

Just north of Fife, Perth and Kinross have 806 positive cases over the seven-day period.

Moving closer to the capital again, Midlothian has 666 new cases and East Lothian has 621.

Looking at the country as a whole, on July 8, 2,802 new cases of COVID-19 were reported across Scotland.

This translates to 8% of all Covid-19 tests.

There were also four newly reported death as a result of the virus, with 38 more people in intensive care and 401 people in hospital as of yesterday.

Despite showing a slight downward trend in the number of daily positive cases from the end of June, Scotland is still much worse off than this time last month.

On July 6, there were 2,967 positive cases that day. When compared to June 6's numbers of just 611, it's clear to see the overall increasing trend.

Nonetheless, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon hopes that "the end is in sight".

Plans are still going ahead for all of Scotland to return to Level 0 on July 19 and for all restrictions to be lifted on July 9.

However, the First Minister has warned the nation that this date "is not set in stone", as Scotland's coronavirus infections are still "higher than we want them to be right now"
