Covid Scotland: East Renfrewshire cases see dramatic spike as rate surpasses Moray

A sudden rise in coronavirus cases in East Renfrewshire could see the council area placed under tighter lockdown measures.

The area's case rate has jumped to 75.4, overtaking Moray, which has been kept at Level 3 restrictions alongside Glasgow, while the rest of the country moves to Level 2.

72 positive cases have been recorded within the boundary over the past seven days.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney addressed the case rise in East Renfrewshire on BBC Good Morning Scotland today, saying it had been "very very swift".

He refused to rule out the possibility of the council area being placed under tighter restrictions, saying that the Scottish Government would "continue to monitor the situation".

Mr Swinney said: “Obviously we are seeing changes that are taking place at a relatively quick pace of time and the East Renfrewshire rise has been very very swift in taking its course.

"We will continue to monitor the situation in every local authority area and look at every single outbreak to determine if there are further patterns that are emerging from these particular outbreaks. If there is a necessity for us to take action and to apply restrictions once again we will unfortunately have to do that.

"We made it very clear as we set out the basis of moving from Level 3 to Level 2 that there may be circumstances where we have to apply further restrictions to make sure we contain any outbreaks that take place and we’ll be continuing to monitor that every day in the forthcoming week.”
