Covid Scotland: booster vaccine leaves patients with unusual side effect of 'feeling thirsty'

An unusual but mild side effect of the Covid booster vaccine has been brought to experts' attention.

Many people have been left feeling thirsty after getting their third jab.

This is much more mild in comparison to side effects from the first two with experts saying that they've noticed less people report fevers, fatigue and aching bodies with the booster.

Doctors have reasoned the dehydration by saying it could simply be a symptom of anxiety, the Mirror reports.

It must be noted that this side effect has not been confirmed or seen in clinical trials, but one doctor points out that medics have had a number of reports.

Booster vaccines are currently being given as the key defence against the concerning new Omicron variant with Scotland accelerating the rolls out.

Dr LaTasha Perkins, a family physician in Washington, says extra thirst is nothing to worry about.

“People have different symptoms when they get their immunisations, but I have heard of people feeling a little bit thirsty," she told Huffington Post :

“That’s not an uncommon finding.”

But Natasha Bhuyan, a physician at primary care US-based practice One Medical, believes there could be other reasons behind the reported dehydration.

“If someone is nervous about the vaccine, that can cause dry mouth, as anxiety is linked to dry mouth.” she said.

It comes as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say your third booster shot should be a much smoother experience.

“People had fewer reactions after their third dose than after their second dose,” CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said.

Currently, all those over the age of 40 can book their third dose online here.

And all Scots over the age of 18 will be offered the booster vaccine three months after their second jab.

Those with underlying health conditions, people who work on in social care of for the NHS and those who are eligible for the flu vaccine are now being offered the booster jab.

You can find out if you are able to book your third doses here on NHS inform.
