Covid Scotland: Booster jab update as waiting time for third vaccine slashed

Yesterday, November 29, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon held an emergency Covid briefing as Covid cases of the new variant was first detected in Glasgow and Lanarkshire.

She said: "We are already going very fast in the booster programme, we are the most vaccinated part of the UK, we are already trying to step that up."

Now, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) have announced that they recommend the waiting time between doses should be shortened and be offered to a wider range of people, in a bid to fight the new Covid variant.

This follows from the advice that young people should also be offered the Covid booster vaccine earlier.

Currently those over 40 can book their booster jab through NHS Inform but it the JCVI are recommending those over 18 should also be offered the third jab.

The waiting time between the second dose and the booster vaccine has now been advised to be cut from six months to just three.

Following the changes, Scotland's Chief Medical Officer Gregor Smith said: "We welcome the further advice from the JCVI on the Covid-19 vaccination programme and confirm Scotland has already started work on its implementation, including the recommendation that boosters can now be given to all adults no less than three months after a second dose.

"Urgent talks with health boards and vaccination partners are underway and further information on the delivery of this advice will follow as soon as possible."

Professor Wei Shen Lim, from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), said boosters should be issued "early enough before any possible wave" of the new variant, to ensure the country is in the "best possible position".

The JCVI have also added that they advise a fourth dose of the vaccine for immunosuppressed people - those classed as the most vulnerable.

Sturgeon will be giving a Covid briefing today and you can keep up with the latest updates here.
