Covid Scotland: Anti-lockdown protestors head to Edinburgh but plan for mass shop reopening flops

A plan by Covid-deniers to convince businesses to re-open and break coronavirus rules today has been called off after a lack of interest.

Dubbed the "Great Reopening", they had hoped to inspire a number of businesses to rebel against the current lockdown regulations that have forced hospitality and non-essential retail to close due to coronavirus.

But despite organisers "best attempts" the plan was called off in Scotland after a lack of interest.

In messages seen by Edinburgh Live, organisers told supporters they had called the event off after "months" of work due to businesses choosing not to open.

It is understood they hoped a number of local businesses would open regardless of government lockdown rules currently in place in Scotland.

Despite the flop a planned protest against lockdown is still expected to ahead in Edinburgh from 1pm, with protestors gathering in The Meadows.

Members of an encrypted message channel have been sharing their plans to travel to the capital despite restrictions on crossing local authority boundaries.

Plans have also been shared to potentially dupe the police, allowing them to believe the protest would be held at The Scottish Parliament when it is in fact planned for The Meadows.

An organiser behind the "Stand Up Edinburgh" group posted a voice note saying he had been "watching police" gather at Holyrood before seeing them move off.

He then asked supporters to report if police had gathered at other locations, including Calton Hill and Leith Links.

"If things go s*** regroup at the National Museum," a message to supporters read.

"Hopefully the Gestapo don't stop us today," the organiser added.

Responding to this message, one person said: "I think we need to stand our ground today.

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
