Covid Scotland: Almost all Edinburgh neighbourhoods above threshold for Level Four lockdown

Edinburgh's coronavirus cases have been sky-rocketing over the past few weeks, as restrictions on hospitality and nightlife ease across the country.

Now almost all of Edinburgh neighbourhoods are 'coronavirus hotspots' reporting more than 400 cases per 100,000 population.

This comes as Edinburgh was named a "European Covid hotspot" following WHO findings which determined the city was one of the places worst affected on the continent.

Within Edinburgh, Muirhouse is the neighbourhood with the highest rate, reporting 83 positive cases.

According to latest figures, there were 1,381.8 per 100,000 population.

The other two areas that have reported more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 of the population are Tollcross, with 1,230.9 and Craigmillar, with 1,038.8 per 100,000.

Other extremely high areas include the likes of Meadows and Southside with a rate of 639.7, Merchiston and Greenhill with 691.6, and New Town West with 796.2.

The only neighbourhoods not within the 400+ region are: Canonmills (399.5), Clovenstone and Wester Hailes (378.9), Currie West (210.9), Inverleith, Goldenacre and Warriston (256.5), Moredun and Craigour (301), Newington and Dalkeith Road (383.5), Oxgangs (376.1), South Gyle (397.9) and The Shore and Constitution Street (308.6).

There have been eight additional deaths reported across the country. There were 15 new hospital admissions and two more admissions to intensive care.

At her briefing on Friday, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon put to bed claims of a circuit breaker lockdown before students returned to university, but she did say that the 'possibility cannot be ruled out', as Scotland are going through a 'difficult period.'

She said: "Even if a much smaller proportion of people who get Covid now need to go to hospital, basic arithmetic tells us that a small percentage of a very large number is still a big number.

"Indeed, in recent days we have seen an increase in the number of people in hospital. And of course people who do not go to hospital can still suffer serious illness – including through long Covid."
