Covid Scotland: Almost all areas of Edinburgh over threshold for Level 4 restrictions

Coronavirus cases are continuing to soar across Edinburgh, with over 50 neighbourhoods reporting a 400+ 7 day rate, well over the threshold for maximum restrictions.

The capital is currently experiencing both the highest case rate and numbers in Scotland, with 289 new cases of Covid-19 reported today (July 17) alone.

With level two restrictions currently in place in the capital, and with modified level zero restrictions to be introduced on Monday, it is expected that transmission will remain high across the country for the next few weeks.

Neighbourhoods such as Craigeninny, Morningside and Niddrie all remain in the 400+ category, in total recording a combined number of 63 cases of coronavirus over the last week.

Meanwhile, Cramond is the only neighbourhood in the City of Edinburgh with fewer than three cases of coronavirus in their population.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed Scotland will move to level zero on Monday, despite the high case numbers and transmission rates.

Despite daily figures seeing over 2,000 new cases per day, the First Minister highlighted the continuation in low hospital admissions, ICU admissions and deaths.

However, some "modifications" have been made to the initial plans level zero, which will include an extended 'work from home' message, a midnight curfew for hospitality, and the continued use of face coverings in public places.
