Covid Scotland: Almost 2,000 Scots attended Euro celebrations or matches with coronavirus

A Scottish Government report has found that 397 Scots who attended the Scotland versus England match at Wembley on June 18 had Covid-19.

The Scottish Government analysed Test and Protect data to study the link between the Euro 2020 tournament and a huge surge in Covid cases among young men.

They found that between the 11 and 28 June 2021, 1,991 Scots were identified as having attended one or more Euro 2020 events while they were infectious.

The 1991 Scots with positive Covid were tracked to have attended a match at either Hampden Park, Wembley, the Fanzone at Glasgow Green, or a pub or house gathering.

Some 1,470 of these flagged Covid cases were among the age category of 20 to 39 and nine out ten cases were among males.

And 1,294 of these cases reported that they had travelled to London for a Euro 2020 event, with 397 confirmed to have attended the match at Wembley with active Covid.

More than a third (34 per cent) of all of the Euro-related cases came from those who had visited hospitality venues, while a small number (55) had been to The Fanzone, 38 were tracked to the two home matches of Croatia at Hampden and 37 at the Czech Republic Hampden Match.

Public Health Scotland said: “PHS is working with Test and Protect NHS boards to ensure that all public health actions are taken in the close contacts of these Euro 2020 cases as part of the 32,539 cases that were reported to the Test and Protect Cases Management System during this period.”
