Covid Scotland: 761 new cases overnight as fear grows over new Delta variant

The number of positive covid cases in Scotland has risen by 761 in the past 24 hours.

Of the 15,781 new tests, 5.2% were positives, with 198 of the positive tests recorded in Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Lothian is now the area with the most new cases at 210. Meanwhile, Lanarkshire recorded 93 cases.

No deaths of people with a positive coronavirus test were recorded overnight, meaning Scotland's death toll remains at 7,681.

128 people are currently in hospital while 17 are in intensive care with recently confirmed Covid-19.

3,517,668 people have received their first dose of the vaccine while 2,446,834 have received their second jab.

Earlier today, Professor Jason Leitch warned the first dose of coronavirus vaccine only offers about 30% protection from the "horrid" Delta variant.

Scotland's national clinical director stressed the need to get both vaccinations to offer "decent" protection and suggested eight to 10 weeks of progress thanks to the vaccine had been "lost" because of the variant, first identified in India.

Speaking on the BBC's Good Morning Scotland, Prof Leitch said the new strain has "changed the game" in terms of the vaccine rollout because of the lack of protection offered by the first dose alone.

He said: "The Delta variant has changed the game in one crucial way.

"Everything still works - distancing, ventilation, handwashing all still works - but what's new about the Delta variant, and this is horrid, and we've learned it increasingly over the last few weeks, is the second dose is required for decent protection.

"You get about 30% protection from one dose, you get 80 to 85% from two.

"So therefore, if you're thinking of this as a timeline, we've lost about eight to 10 weeks on that journey.

"We vaccinated about half the country's adults twice, now we need to get that up."
