Covid Scotland: 525 new coronavirus cases as 18 more sadly lose their lives

A total of 525 new coronavirus cases have been identified in Scotland in the last 24 hours, with a further 18 people sadly passing away.

Of the 19,615 tests which reported results, 3.1 per cent were positive. Some 898 patients are currently being treated by medics for the virus in hospital while 74 people are in intensive care with recently confirmed Covid.

Some 1,570,153 people have now received the first dose of a Covid vaccination and 72,178 have received their second dose. The news comes as it was announced that over 40s are now eligible to get their Covid vaccine.

NHS Scotland follow the JCVI's advice and are vaccinating those most at risk first, and those who work closest with them.

Professor Wei Shen Lim, Covid-19 chair for JCVI, said: "Vaccinations stop people from dying and the current strategy is to prioritise those who are more likely to have severe outcomes and die from Covid-19.

"The evidence is clear that the risk of hospitalisation and death increases with age.

"The vaccination programme is a huge success and continuing the age-based rollout will provide the greatest benefit in the shortest time, including to those in occupations at a higher risk of exposure."
