Covid Scotland: 20 more coronavirus deaths and 691 new cases in past 24 hours

Scotland has recorded the deaths of 20 coronavirus patients and 691 new cases in the past 24 hours, Nicola Sturgeon said.

The First Minister told MSPs on Holyrood's Covid-19 Committee that the number of people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for the disease had now risen to 7,461.

The daily test positivity rate is 3.1%, Ms Sturgeon said.

She also told the committee that by 8.30am this morning a total of 1,809,158 Scots had received their first dose of the vaccine, an increase of 19,781 on the previous day's total.

Other figures on the number of people in hospital will be available later in the day, the First Minister said.

Earlier this morning National Clinical Director Jason Leitch said that there is "potential" for the return of the levels system to be brought forward if transmission rates remain low - although he warned that travel restrictions would likely remain in place for some time.

It comes after Nicola Sturgeon announced last month that “if all goes according to plan”, the country will move back to the levels system of Covid-19 restrictions from April 26, with all council areas moving to Level 3 - allowing for a “phased but significant reopening of the economy, including non-essential retail, hospitality and services like gyms and hairdressers”.
