'Covid rules took a terrible toll on mental health of care home residents'

Few have endured more during the pandemic than residents of care homes.

When Covid first struck the Government turned places of sanctuary into deathtraps by transferring patients from hospitals to homes without testing them for the virus.

Lockdown rules prevented friends and families from visiting loved ones. These restrictions were necessary but came at a heavy price.

Many vulnerable and elderly people were cut off from the outside world and denied the comfort of a visit by their nearest and dearest.

This took a terrible toll on their health and mental wellbeing.

Which is why the decision to ease strict Covid measures for care homes in England from Monday will be so welcome.

Safety must remain a priority. The battle against the virus is far from won.

But this is an important step back that will mean so much to those who have sacrificed so much in the past two years.

Purse stings

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss once pledged a “zero-tolerance” approach to wasteful government expenditure.

When it comes to her own behaviour she adopts a very different approach.

The Foreign Secretary reportedly blew £500,000 of taxpayers’ money on a private jet to Australia when she could have travelled by commercial flights for a fraction of the cost.

This is not the only time she has been so carefree with our money. She spent £1,400 on dinner at a private club owned by a Tory donor.

It is not just the double standards which is so sickening. It is that she insists on living the high life at our expense while supporting measures that will leave the poorest worse off.

Comic’s comic

Barry Cryer was not just a brilliant comedian in his own right. He wrote gags for every major comic from Bob Hope to Morecambe and Wise.

He was the funnyman who made other people funny.
