Covid Scotland: The lockdown rule changes ahead as restrictions ease further next week

Scotland is set to review its lockdown rules, meaning the country could move into Level 2 lockdown measures from next week.

Restrictions were eased on April 26 when beer gardens, restaurants and cafes reopened along with shops, gyms, swimming pools, libraries and museums.

The next easing of restrictions is set to take place on Monday, May 17.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is expected to meet clinical advisers this week before making an announcement to confirm the move to the lower stage of the five-tier system..

Ms Sturgeon has said that, cases permitting, Scotland will enter level 2 on Monday, May 17, level 1 on Monday June 7 and level 0 in late June.

Though she has warned "the precise detail of any continued restrictions will depend on an assessment of the situation closer to the time."

She said: “We would hope, from that date, to allow indoor hospitality to return to greater normality, with alcohol able to be served indoors and within more normal opening hours, though possibly with some continued restrictions - a requirement for people to book in 2 hour slots, for example."

In Level 2, restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars can open indoors and serve alcohol until 10:30pm with two-hour pre-booked slots.

Cinemas, theatres, concert halls, music venues, comedy clubs and bingo halls can open with restrictions, as can outdoor performing arts activities. Small outdoor and indoor events may be able to resume, subject to capacity limits.

Meeting inside people's homes will also be permitted from May 17 in groups of up to four from two households. Six from three households can also meet in an indoor public space, while eight adults from eight households can meet outdoors.

Level 2 changes

The following changes, if approved this week, will come into effect from May 17:

  • Restrictions on outdoor social gatherings to ease further
  • 4 adults from 2 households in your home or theirs – and can stay overnight
  • 6 adults from 3 households in an indoor public place like a café, pub or restaurant
  • 8 adults from 8 households outdoors
  • Adult outdoor contact sports and indoor group exercises resume
  • Cinemas, amusement arcades and bingo halls reopen
  • Outdoor and indoor events to re-start on a small scale
  • Colleges and universities return to blended learning
  • Face-to-face support services resume
  • Non-professional performance arts resume
