Covid rule breaker caught by Gardai coming back from party at checkpoint

With Level Five restrictions still in place Gardai continue to mount their usual Covid-19 checkpoints across the country.

As part of Operation Fanacht officers continue to mount patrols on Irish roads in a bid to encourage people to continue to follow currently public health advice.

One of the most common rules broken reported by Gardai is people breaking the 5km travel limit.

However one motorist caught by Gardai was found to not one break multiple Covid rules but also a number of traffic laws.

Gardai in Cork this week stopped a driver at a Covid-19 checkpoint where they discovered the person was outside of their 5km travel limit.

And it emerged that they has been returning home from a party in Clonmel- a major breach in Covid-19 rules.

The driver also had no licence, insurance, tax or NCT on their car.

Gardai said: "Car stopped by Cork City Divisional RPU at #COVID19 checkpoint in Glanmire. Driver & passenger outside their 5 km - returning from a party in Clonmel.

"Driver had no licence or insurance and no tax or NCT on car. Fines issued & car impounded. Proceedings commenced."

Earlier this month more than 7,500 fines of €100 had been issued by Garda to people for undertaking non-essential travel.

A further 341 fines worth €500 have been distributed for non-essential trips to ports and airports.
