Covid restrictions and social distancing guidelines for when gyms reopen in England

Gyms in England have been given the green light to reopen in the coming weeks.

On Monday, March 29 the government allowed outdoor gym and leisure facilities to reopen, including swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts and other outdoor sports facilities.

As more restrictions are set to lift in the coming weeks, exercise fans will be able to get back into working out at the gym.

But there will be some social distancing rules and Covid restrictions in place that visitors will have to abide by.

Here's everything you need to know, as reported by The Mirror.

When will gyms reopen?

From April 12, indoor gym facilities and leisure centres will be fully opened, allowing people to say goodbye to their home workouts for good.

Equipment such as squat racks, dumbbells and running machines will all be available to use again.

Be sure to check your gym's website on how to book, guidelines and what you need to do when visiting.

Social distancing will still be in place, and until May 17 you will not be allowed to mix indoors with anybody outside your household.

Gym facilities and equipment indoors will still be spaced apart with the rule of two-meters remaining along with the extra cleaning procedures in place.

If you’re planning to visit outdoor gym facilities here are the rules you’ll still need to follow when exercising outdoors:

  • Social distancing - keeping two-meters apart from anyone outside of your household when outdoors
  • Two households or up to a group of six people can meet outdoors, including meeting for a game of tennis or outdoor fitness class if on offer
  • Face masks are not necessary when outside, but must still be worn if you are walking through a leisure or gym to get to your outdoor activity
