Covid puts Cooch Behar Trophy in jeopardy

MUMBAI: The BCCI is likely to postpone the knockout phase the Cooch Behar Trophy (for Under-19), otherwise set to kick off from Tuesday in Pune, due to the rising number of cases in all the teams.

Just ahead of their quarterfinals against Rajasthan in Pune, Mumbai suffered a massive jolt as four of their players and one member of the support staff tested positive for Covid-19. With one player having already tested positive a couple of days back, the number of Covid infected persons in the Mumbai contingent has increased to six.

"With practice having been cancelled, all the players have been told to stay in their rooms. The teams are awaiting further instructions from the Board. At this moment, the remaining part of the tournament looks set to be postponed," a source told TOI.

On January 5, the BCCI had postponed all the tournaments in domestic cricket, excluding the Cooch Behar Trophy, after a nationwide surge in coronavirus cases, the country's cricket board said in a statement. Last Friday it had emerged that as many as 15 members of the Mumbai Cricket Association's staff, and three staffers in the BCCI's office had tested positive for Covid-19.

44,388 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Maharashtra on Sunday, with 19,474 fresh infections in Mumbai.
