Covid peak over, but mortality persists in UT

CHANDIGARH: From February till date, 40 Covid deaths have been reported. While some states have reported no deaths for a while, there is no such gap in the city. Public health experts feel that the city has a greater population of the elderly, which is why mortality has been high here.

“When the third wave started by the end of December, daily deaths were being reported. As the numbers declined after the peak, deaths decreased, but continued,” said a public health expert.

Though no death was reported on Sunday, there were deaths from February 20 to February 23. After a gap of two days, another Covid death was reported. “These were mainly of those who were on ventilators due to severe Covid and other comorbidities. Most of them were admitted in PGI and succumbed to the virus after long treatment,” said a doctor in the institute.

After IIT Kanpur’s prediction of the fourth wave by the end of June, public health experts have been cautioning to follow Covid appropriate behaviour. “This is especially to reduce mortality. Even when the third wave was not severe, we still had 87 deaths from December 26 till date in the city, which is one death on an average daily,” said a public health expert.

The main comorbidities were the same as in the previous waves. Those who had diabetes, heart diseases and cancer did not survive the virus despite being fully or partially vaccinated.

20 cases in Chd

On Sunday, 20 covid cases were reported. The positivity rate was 1.18%, while active cases numbered 165. A total of 22 patients were discharged on Sunday and 18 patients are on oxygen support, while four are on ventilators. There are 91,732 confirmed cases, including 1,165 deaths.
