COVID outbreak at East Kilbride McDonald's restaurant

Two staff at an East Kilbride McDonalds have tested positive for COVID.

The outbreak at the Queensway fast food joint has seen workers self-isolate.

But despite the two positive cases the restaurant remains open.

McDonald's insisted a deep clean was carried out and that all the relevant authorities were informed.

But one worried employee told the News that staff "have been working while displaying symptoms of COVID-19".

This has been categorically denied by McDonald's.

The staff member added: "If a deep clean is required, they don't close the store right away. They wait until early morning when it's quiet.

"And the people who are cleaning the store every night and disinfecting the surfaces are doing so while they serve customers and cook food.

"They shouldn't be able to put us all in danger and prolong any lockdown".

The insider also said complaints were made to environmental health but McDonalds say officers contacted the Queensway and Whirlies restaurants as part of a routine check-ins that happen semi-regularly in the current trading environment.

And that environmental health were "entirely satisfied" with its processes and procedures in both stores, and indicated that no follow-up visit was required.

Concerns were also raised over working practices at the Whirlies restaurant last September when a worker there tested positive

A McDonald's spokesman went on: “Two employees at our East Kilbride Queensway restaurant are currently self-isolating after testing positive for COVID-19.

"As soon as we were informed, the restaurant underwent an enhanced clean as a precaution. "We conducted a close-contact investigation and contacted all restaurant employees as well as Public Health Scotland.

" We have a number of safety measures in place to help keep our people safe, including perspex screens, temperature checks at the start of each shift, maintaining a two metre distance from others as much as possible, face coverings, regular hand washing and the use of hand sanitiser.”

The company also say deep cleans are carried out between 3am and 5am due to premises having to be empty while this is done.

Shirley Clelland, Head of Fleet and Environmental Services at SLC said: “Environmental Services has engaged with this and other local businesses in line with the national enforcement strategy for managing business compliance.”
