Covid NI: Two further deaths and over 1,450 cases reported

A further 1,471 positive Covid cases have been recorded in Northern Ireland in the last 24 hours.

The data released by the Department of Health (DoH) on Thursday afternoon, July 29, brings the total number of positive cases to 154,167 since the start of the pandemic.

Two more coronavirus-related deaths were also reported, with the death toll from the DoH now standing at 2,178.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 8,141 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Thursday, there are currently 234 Covid-confirmed patients in hospital and 31 in intensive care.

2,239,652 vaccines have now been administered in total.

The figures come after Economy Minister Gordon Lyons confirmed the Northern Ireland High Street Voucher Scheme is set to be rolled out in September.

Everyone over the age of 18 will be able to apply for the £100 voucher scheme, meaning up to 1.4million people will have an extra £100 to spend on high streets rather than online.

The Economy Minister said: "This scheme is a key element of my Department's Economic recovery plan and will give a very welcome boost to our high streets which were hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic. This uplift is what local businesses need and deserve."

Hospitality businesses will also benefit from the scheme, according to officials.

Colin Neill, Chief Executive of Hospitality Ulster said: "Hospitality businesses are an integral part of our city, town and village high streets and have suffered considerably due to the impact of Covid. The High Street Scheme is a really welcome and important we can all support our struggling high street businesses."
