Covid NI: Ten further deaths and 948 positive cases reported

Ten further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland on Monday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,715.

Nine fatalities are said to have occurred during the current reporting period, and one outside of it.

A further 948 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in NI today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 276,220 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 8,227 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Monday, there are currently 326 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 36 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland’s leaders have said the public should expect to be asked for proof of their Covid-19 status.

First Minister Paul Givan and deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill were speaking ahead of the latest relaxations to coronavirus restrictions in the region which have now come into force.

Nightclubs are able to open for the first time in 19 months, customers are able move around hospitality venues, indoor dancing is allowed and the need for social distancing in hospitality settings has moved to guidance.

While so-called vaccine passports have not been made mandatory, the ministers said that as part of measures to ensure safer environments, people should expect to be asked for “proof of their Covid status”.

The Stormont Executive has advised venues to introduce their own Covid entry checks but has stopped short of bringing in a mandatory system similar to the one operating in the Irish Republic.
