Covid NI: Six further deaths and 1,423 positive cases reported

Six further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland on Wednesday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,635.

Four fatalities are said to have occurred during the current reporting period, and two outside of it.

A further 1,423 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in NI today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 262,397 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 8,850 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Wednesday, there are currently 355 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 33 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, restrictions on care home visits are now eased in Northern Ireland.

Health Minister Robin Swann said that taking effect from today more people will be allowed to visit loved ones more frequently.

The UUP minister said: “Following the latest review, the restrictions on visiting in care homes have moved into the ‘Gradual Easing’ phase as set out in the ‘Visiting With Care - A Pathway’ document.

"The main change will see an increase in the frequency of visits permitted and in the number of people permitted to visit care homes at the same time.

“Up to four people from no more than two households will now be able to visit together, with a maximum of four such visits per week being allowed.”
