Covid NI: Six further deaths and 1,031 positive cases reported

Six further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland on Sunday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,453.

The six fatalities are said to have occurred during the current 24 hour reporting period.

A further 1,031 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in NI today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 217,912 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

The full dashboard is not set to be updated until Monday but in a tweet, the DoH said that 2,492,097 vaccines have been administered in total.

It comes as Health Secretary Sajid Javid confirmed vaccine passports for large events will not be going ahead.

Mr Javid's confirmation follows weeks of backlash from Tory MPs, reports the Mirror.

He told Sky News he hopes the Government can avoid bringing in the measures.

But speaking to BBC Mr Javid said: "We shouldn't be doing things for the sake of it", before adding: "I'm pleased to say we will not be going ahead with plans."

Meanwhile, Monday will see the start of the Jabbathon vaccine take-up initiative for students, involving around 60 walk-in clinics across some 30 Further and Higher Education campuses.
