Covid NI: Over 3,400 positive cases and one further death reported

A further 3,420 positive Covid cases have been recorded in Northern Ireland today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 466,290 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 33,666 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

One further coronavirus-related death has also been reported in Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 3,015.

The fatality is said to have occurred outside the current reporting period.

Meanwhile, Northern Ireland’s Health Minister has spoken candidly about the toll taken on his family by death threats he received over his handling of the Covid pandemic.

Robin Swann also accused some of his political critics of using “dog whistle” politics to give cover to those engaging in abusive behaviour against him.

Mr Swann said the biggest challenge he and his wife have faced is explaining to their two young children why they have had to take steps to fortify their home.

The minister spoke of his experiences as he reflected on the two-year anniversary of his appointment: “Never did I envisage at any time one one of the challenges that I’d have to wade against was personal death threats.”
