Covid NI: One further death and over 1,000 cases reported

One further coronavirus-related death has been reported in Northern Ireland on Wednesday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,206.

The fatality is recorded to have occurred during the current reporting period.

A further 1,040 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in Northern Ireland today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 160,511 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 7,804 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Wednesday, there are currently 226 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 38 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, just 34 people got their first coronavirus vaccine across the whole of Northern Ireland on Monday, despite thousands not being jabbed yet.

It comes as hospitals fill with coronavirus patients leading to the cancellation of cancer operations and kidneys being declined for those on the transplant list.

Just 61% of NI’s 18 to 29-year-old have had their first vaccine according to the latest figures, while almost a third of 30 to 39-year-olds are still to show up for theirs.

A Department of Health spokesperson said while the number of first jabs on Monday was low, around 3,752 were vaccinated for the first time across Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
