Covid NI: No further deaths and 420 coronavirus cases reported

The Department of Health has recorded no further coronavirus-related deaths today.

The death toll from the DoH remains at 2,156, according to figures released on Monday afternoon.

Today's dashboard also reports a further 420 positive cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of positive cases to 129,200 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 2,788 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 32 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and four in intensive care.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Robin Swann has said he does not agree with the news that face masks in England may not be compulsory in just two weeks time.

On Sunday, housing secretary Robert Jenrick told BBC 's Andrew Marr that face masks are to become a personal choice.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to give an update on coronavirus measures on Monday afternoon and legal restrictions in England are expected to be lifted on July 19.

Speaking to Good Morning Ulster, the Health Minister was asked if face masks potentially becoming voluntary was something he would "advocate".

He said: "It wouldn't be no, look I think we have seen the protections that have come from the wearing of face masks in certain areas. It is something that the Executive keeps under continual review...

"One of the concerns that we have and has been expressed in regards to the Delta variant which is with us at this minute at time, is that transmissibility. We do know that face coverings are one of the main protections against that and the main fight that we use as regards to all those other steps including our vaccine programme."
