Covid NI: No further deaths and 179 coronavirus cases reported

The Department of Health has recorded no further coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours.

The death toll from the DoH remains at 2,155.

Thursday's dashboard also reports a further 179 positive cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of positive cases to 124,303 since the start of the pandemic.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 847 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

There are currently 16 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and none in intensive care.

Meanwhile, two more Northern Ireland towns have been earmarked for enhanced testing after probable cases of the Delta variant were identified.

The Public Health Agency says suspected Delta variant (VOC-21APR-02) patients have been uncovered in areas of Ballymoney and Omagh.

It follows testing in Kilkeel where 28 cases were uncovered.

The PHA says the early results in counties Tyrone and Antrim are suggestive of the variant but that this has not been confirmed.

As a precautionary measure the PHA is asking asymptomatic people to get tested in selected, targeted neighbourhoods within these areas. This is in advance of confirmation of whether the variant is present and so they can identify asymptomatic Covid-19 cases early and reduce the risk of spread in the community.
