Covid NI: Nine further deaths and 1,320 positive cases reported

Nine further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland on Monday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,311.

A further 1,320 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in NI today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 188,589 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 11,944 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Wednesday, there are currently 352 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 43 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Robin Swann has said that despite increasing cases of Covid-19 across Northern Ireland, now is not the right time to impose tighter restrictions.

He said that the NI vaccination programme had been “re-energised” following the Big Jab Weekend initiative at the SSE Arena where it is believed that at least 8,000 vaccinations were delivered.

The Health Minister told BBC NI: "I don't think we are at that point yet about putting more restrictions back in.

"The Executive meets again in the first week in September in regards to what's still in place and what we'll look at in regards to the next steps, and that's where that decision will be made."

Northern Ireland currently has the highest infection rate in the UK and the lowest vaccination rates.
