Covid NI: Four further deaths and over 1,380 cases reported

Four further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland on Friday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,240.

One fatality is said to have occurred during the current reporting period, and the other three outside of it.

A further 1,389 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in NI today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 172,866 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 9,405 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Friday, there are currently 359 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 44 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, First Minister Paul Givan has said he hopes all restrictions in Northern Ireland can be lifted next month.

According to the BBC, he said he hoped the changes would go further for hospitality and indicated he hoped all remaining restrictions could be scrapped by the end of September.

It's understood the DUP MLA said current restrictions have affected the hospitality sector's sustainability.

"From my party's perspective, we're getting to the point that personal responsibility, taking informed decisions at an individual level, is how we need to address this.

"The justification for having regulations in place for this is diminishing and I don't think is proportionate," he told the BBC.
