Covid NI: Four further deaths and 1,051 positive cases reported

Four further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland on Thursday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,639.

The fatalities are said to have occurred during the current reporting period.

A further 1,051 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in NI today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 263,448 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 8,582 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Thursday, there are currently 357 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 35 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, planned easing of coronavirus restrictions in Northern Ireland on October 31 remains on course, Michelle O'Neill has insisted.

The Deputy First Minister said ministers remained committed to steps that include the reopening of nightclubs and the removal of social distancing rules for bars and restaurants.

Her comments come after the Irish Government scaled back the extent of Covid-19 restrictions it had planned to lift this Friday amid rising case numbers, with Ministers meeting today.

Ms O'Neill said she expected some clarification to emerge after that meeting in respect of the hospitality sector, such as guidance on mask wearing.

The Sinn Fein vice president said Northern Ireland was facing a "difficult winter".
