Covid NI: Five further deaths and over 1,070 cases reported

A further 1,072 positive Covid cases have been recorded in Northern Ireland on Sunday.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 157,517 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Five further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported, with the death toll from the DoH now standing at 2,194.

According to figures released on Sunday, 1,072 positive cases and five deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours. The Department of Health also said 2,262,641 vaccines had been administered in total.

On Saturday, as eight more Covid-19 deaths were reported in Northern Ireland, Health Minister Robin Swann said it provided a stark reminder of the impact of the virus.

He expressed his sympathies after the deaths were reported on Saturday along with 1,117 new confirmed cases of coronavirus.

The deaths of eight people who had previously tested positive were announced on a day when vaccination centres in Northern Ireland saw a surge in activity as they administered first doses to adults for the last time.

"Every death is hugely regrettable and I extend my sympathy to all families who have been bereaved over the last 18 months," said Mr Swann.

"The numbers recorded today provide a stark reminder of the devastating impact that this pandemic can have.

"It will only be through continued vigilance and a collective effort that we can protect ourselves and those we care for."
