Covid NI: Five further deaths and 1,658 positive cases reported

Five further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland on Tuesday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,907.

The fatalities are said to have occurred during the current reporting period.

A further 1,658 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in NI today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 331,476 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 12,519 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Tuesday, there are currently 317 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 35 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, Belfast International Airport has issued updated advice for travellers as a number of changes to international travel to and from Northern Ireland come into effect to help slow the Omicron variant.

As of 4am on Tuesday, December 7, anyone arriving into Northern Ireland from abroad will be required to take a pre-departure Covid test.

According to the Department of Health, this applies to all travellers aged 12 years old and over, including those who are fully vaccinated.

Health officials say it is a temporary measure and will be reviewed prior to December 20.

International travellers will have to provide a negative pre-departure PCR or LFD test taken 48 hours before travelling, in addition to a negative PCR test on or before day two after arrival.

In a statement to Belfast Live, a spokesperson for the airport said: “We would urge all passengers intending to travel to check the latest guidance available through the NI Direct website before arriving at the airport to ensure they are fully compliant and prepared for travel.

“Please check with your airline’s website for the most up to date information and arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to your departure.”
