Covid NI: Eight further deaths and 1,165 positive cases reported

Eight further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland on Thursday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,525.

The fatalities are said to have occurred during the current reporting period.

A further 1,165 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in NI today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 230,666 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 7,698 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Thursday, there are currently 383 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 31 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, the Northern Ireland Executive is meeting on Thursday to discuss coronavirus restrictions.

Ministers are expected to focus on how to respond to winter pressures.

Decisions around the wearing of face coverings, advice on working from home and testing both before and after travel abroad are also due to be discussed on Thursday.

Retail NI, Hospitality Ulster and Belfast Chamber of Commerce have asked the Executive not to consider a fourth lockdown and to produce a timeline to lift existing Covid-19 restrictions.

And on Wednesday, Health Minister Robin Swann said that health care workers across Northern Ireland are "exhausted" and "running on empty" after 18 months of working on the front lines during the pandemic.
