Covid NI: Eight further deaths and 1,030 positive cases reported

Eight further coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in Northern Ireland on Friday.

The death toll from the Department of Health now stands at 2,533.

The fatalities are said to have occurred during the current reporting period.

A further 1,030 positive Covid cases have also been recorded in NI today.

This brings the total number of positive cases to 231,696 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Department of Health.

Over the past seven days, the Department said 7,607 individuals have tested positive in Northern Ireland.

According to figures released on Friday, there are currently 373 Covid-19 confirmed patients in hospital and 31 in intensive care.

Meanwhile, around 100 military medics are to be sent to Northern Ireland hospitals to provide support, it's been reported.

According to Sky News, they are expected to attend Belfast City Hospital and the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.

They added that a third hospital may also receive assistance.

These military personnel will help hospitals in NI deal with the amount of coronavirus patients.

It's understood a source from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the authorisation to deploy the medics had been granted from Friday and the medics are to be deployed in the next few days.

Sky have also reported that a second source said it was thought the personnel would arrive here on September 29 and start work on October 4.
