Covid NI: 12 further deaths and over 1,600 positive cases reported

A further 1,648 Covid-19 cases have been recorded across Northern Ireland in the last 24 hours.

The data released by the Department of Health (DoH) on Tuesday afternoon, August 24, brings the total number of positive cases to 190,237 since the start of the pandemic.

12 more Covid-related deaths were also reported, with the death toll from the DoH now standing at 2,323.

10,046 individuals have been confirmed Covid -positive in Northern Ireland over the past seven days.

There are currently 373 Covid-confirmed patients in hospital and 41 in intensive care, according to the figures.

2,417,807 vaccines have now been administered in total.

These statistics come as, along with Wales, Northern Ireland continues to record its highest rates of new Covid-19 cases since January.

Fermanagh & Omagh has the highest rate of any local authority in the UK, with a total of 1,003.9 cases per 100,000 people recorded in the seven days to August 18.

This is the first time that any local authority in Northern Ireland has recorded rates over 1,000 since comparable records began in summer 2020, when mass testing was first introduced.

11 NI postcode areas were reported as having over 250 new Covid-19 cases between August 16 and August 22.
