Covid news – live: UK daily cases fall slightly as Sunak urges Boris Johnson to end travel rules

AP
Coronavirus in numbers

Major airlines have called for the government to add key holiday destinations to the travel green list this week to stop tens of thousands of jobs from being lost.

Failure to open holiday hotspots in the Mediterranean, US and Caribbean in Thursday’s review of the traffic light system would see the sector facing “five winter seasons in a row”, according to aviation sources.

Ministers are also being urged not to create an amber category that could put thousands of holidaymakers at risk of having to endure an enforced stay in hotel quarantine.

Reports have suggested there is a fallout among Cabinet ministers over proposals to introduce the new watchlist, designed to warn travellers of the possibility that countries with concerning coronavirus data - which could potentially include Italy and Spain - could be put onto the red list at short notice.

A Tory revolt is also threatening prime minister Boris Johnson’s plans to introduce domestic vaccine passports to gain entry to domestic venues and events.
