MUMBAI: A day after registering the Omicron wave’s lowest single-day tally of 192 on Monday, the city recorded zero Covid deaths for the second time in the ongoing third wave on Tuesday, report Malathy Iyer and Bhavika Jain.
Daily cases in city rose slightly to 235 on Tuesday. In the state, both infections and fatalities increased. Maharashtra added 2,831 cases and the fatalities surged to 35 on Tuesday from 12 a day before.

It has been a good day for Mumbai. There are zero deaths, zero sealed buildings and zero containment zones in the city," said BMC additional commissioner Suresh Kakani. Of the 2,500-odd active cases, 93 have symptomatic Covid, 2,185 are asymptomatic and 235 are critical.
The city's daily test positivity rate though nosed up to 0.9% after dropping to 0.6% the previous day.
After the first Covid case was found in the city in March 2020, the first time that the city registered zero deaths was on October 17, 2021. There were seven days of zero deaths in December 2021.
While there were zero deaths on January 2 as well, but it was before the third wave peaked on January 7 with 20,971 cases. There are 353 patients in ICU beds, but most are patients admitted with Covid rather than due to Covid (patients who are admitted for reasons other than Covid, but test positive for the virus).
Senior state officials said deaths are largely being reported from districts which reported a peak after Mumbai and it will take another week or so for deaths to drop across the state. "The Covid graph of the state is on the decline. All the Covid-19 indicators are reporting a drop," said an official.
