Covid lockdowns in Scotland need to be more targeted, says Anas Sarwar

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has called for covid lockdowns in Scotland to be more targeted.

The Glasgow list MSP wants urgent action in Glasgow as the city remains in Level Three lockdown restrictions.

Nicola Sturgeon announced at the Scottish Government daily briefing earlier today that the number of cases per 100,000 in Glasgow had risen over the weekend.

On Friday there were 112 cases per 100,000, while today there are 137 per 100,000.

The south side of the city has been classed as a "hot spot" by government, however Sarwar believes shutting down the whole of Glasgow is not the answer.

On the lockdown, he said: "We have to be more targeted.

"The reality is - I have been supportive of the government's cautious approach since the outset of this pandemic, I have not broken ranks with the general thrust of the government's approach, I might disagree with around the fringes of some of the responses but I think there comes a point where timidity has to be called out.

"Inconsistency in decision making has to be called out and we need to have robust action.

"It is not fair to lockdown an entire city, they are the strictest restrictions anywhere in the UK and at the same time the government is not taking the urgent action necessary in order to get us out of this situation.

"That urgent action is happening in other parts of the country. Why is that urgent action not happening here in Glasgow?

"I live in one of the hotspot postcodes and I know how difficult it is, I'm not negating how difficult it is but the answer to the crisis is not shutting down an entire city.

"It is about getting the capacity on the ground and taking the urgent action we need in order to draw down the virus by identifying where it is, getting people to isolate, by ramping up the vaccine so we can reduce the risk of hospitalisation.

"The longer we stay in perpetual lockdown the harder the national recovery will be.

"So let's have targeted robust action and let's get our country open again so we can focus on the recovery and rebuild our country in what has been the most difficult year in living memory."
