
The UK has reported another 7,540 coronavirus cases, the highest number since late February. A further six people have also died from Covid, the latest release of government data showed today.
It comes as Professor Neil Ferguson said that new modelling data submitted to the Government suggests a risk of “a substantial third wave” of coronavirus infections in the UK.
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, Prof Ferguson said: “Basically it (the modelling) is saying there is a risk of a substantial third wave, (but) we cannot be definitive about the scale of that - it could be substantially lower than the second wave or it could be of the same order of magnitude.”
Meanwhile, the link between infections, hospital admission and deaths has been "broken" by the rollout of the vaccine, the chief executive of NHS Providers, Chris Hopson, has said.
He told Times Radio that hospitals were reporting treating patients who were younger and less sick than before and suggested that they may now be able to “cope with the level of infections”.
