Covid: Kerala reports 31,445 new cases, highest since May 20

NEW DELHI: After the festive week of Onam, Kerala on Wednesday reported over 31,445 new cases, highest since May 20.

The Test Positivity Rate (TRP) in the state stands at 19 per cent. The last time Kerala crossed the 30,000 mark was on May 20 when it reported 30,491 cases. Meanwhile, the toll mounted to 19,972 with 215 new deaths.

The spike in Kerala comes after days of relatively low testing and detections due to Onam. The state reported fewer than 17,000 new daily cases over the past three days, although the numbers prior to that were above 20,000.

The state's tally nearly equalled India's count on the previous day, when 24,733 cases were detected.

With the rise in Covid-19 cases in the state, state Health Minister Veena George said an intensive screening/testing program has been launched to detect as soon as possible who all are infected with coronavirus and to reduce further spread of the pandemic.

India on Wednesday reported 37,593 new cases of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours with Kerala contributing to a majority of 24,296 fresh infections.
