Covid jab unit in Gorseinon, Swansea closes temporarily after decrease in vaccine supply

A mass vaccine centre has closed in Swansea after a decrease in vaccine supply.

The centre in Gorseinon will temporarily shut for the rest of this week and next week beginning April 19.

According to Swansea Bay University Health Board (SUHB) the dip in vaccine supply that has triggered the sudden closure was "expected" and "planned for".

The board added the closure will allow staff at the Gorseinon centre a much needed break while they maximise the use of other sites in the area over the period.

A spokesman for SUHB said: "Our Gorseinon mass vaccine centre is temporarily closed this week and next week due to an expected dip in vaccine supply which was planned for.

"The closure allows staff to take a well deserved break. We are maximising use of our other sites at the Bay and Margam during this period."

The news comes following amid a continued drops in Covid infection rates, while vaccine rates continue to shoot up. There has also been a decrease in the number of people in hospital with coronavirus across Wales too.

However, health chiefs have continued to warn about a possible third wave.

Dr Keith Reid, a director of public health at Swansea UHB, said: "While vaccination offers individual protection against infection we still need people to be cautious: vaccination is not a licence to ignore the safety measures in place to protect others."
