Covid: Italy, Bulgaria and Germany could be added to green list for travel later this week

Twelve countries could be added to the quarantine free travel list later this week as cases begin to stabilise across Scotland.

According to the latest data countries such as Italy, Bulgaria and Germany have low enough coronavirus cases to get the green light from the government.

Representatives from the UK Government and the devolved administrations are set to meet later this week to decide which countries should be put on the green, amber and red lists.

People returning from green list countries don't have to self-isolate, however they do have to take a covid test after the arrive back in Scotland.

Former British Airways strategist Robert Boyle who complied the latest research and has accurately predicted green list changes in the past says as many as 12 countries could be added later this week.

He told The Telegraph that Italy, Germany, Bulgaria, Taiwan, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Poland, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Canada and Austria could all potentially be destinations for holidaymakers this summer.

Low covid cases, good testing infrastructure, high vaccination levels and the low risk of new variants are just some of the criteria looked at when deciding where a country should go on the system.

Boyle has also predicted that around 11 countries could move to the amber list from the red one. They include: India, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

Yesterday, Health Secretary Humza Yousaf said Scotland was "past the worst" of the current wave of covid cases.

Cases peaked at 4,234 on July 1 following a sharp rise over the previous month due to the spread of the Delta variant which originated in India.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will set out the next step of changes to coronavirus restrictions in the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday.
