Covid Ireland: Shocking figures show how likely unvaccinated are to end up in ICU

The CEO of the HSE, Paul Reid, has revealed the startling figures that show how much more likely people unvaccinated against Covid-19 are to end up in ICU.

According to Mr Reid, "unvaccinated people are eight times more likely to end up in ICU" compared to a fully vaccinated person.

As of 8am this morning, there are 487 people in hospital with Covid-19, of which 101 are in ICU, with 58% of those needing treatment in ICU are not fully vaccinated.

There have been 38 discharges in the last 24 hours and 51 admissions.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, Mr Reid said that the virus "will be with us for some time"

He said: "Inevitably with Covid, it’s here with us for some time - there will be hospitalisations, there will sadly be ICU [admissions], and even more sadly there will be mortalities."

"There’s much debate if we just increase ICU beds it will be better… but that’s not really true."

There has been positive news on the vaccination front in recent days. There has been an increase in the number of people registering for a vaccine rising from 1,000 per day to 2,500.

Walk-in vaccine centres will continue to operate over the coming days along with a new campaign to take place over the Halloween weekend in the hope it will boost uptake.
