Covid Ireland: PCR testing will continue this weekend as 25 centres remain open on Christmas Day

The HSE has confirmed that PCR testing will continue this weekend despite the closing of vaccination centres until December 27.

There has been an incredible demand for the more accurate form of testing for Covid-19 as Omicron takes hold in Ireland.

Many people have been airing their frustrations online in recent days over the lack of appointments available in counties nationwide.

However, people are reassured that appointments can become available as the days go on - even if they are booked out right now.

A number of slots are held for GP referrals, and so, if they are not used they’re offered up to the public, so if you’re in need of a PCR, keep an eye on the HSE’s online portal throughout the day.

Damien McCallion, HSE Vaccination Lead, says there will also be appointments available on Christmas Day.

He said the testing capacity has been increased to 250,000 for PCR tests and 100,000 for antigen tests, but centres have been under pressure over the past 48 hours.

"We will continue to operate throughout Christmas Day and Stephen's Day, albeit with a slightly reduced service," he told RTE's Morning Ireland on Friday.

"I appreciate it's difficult for people coming into Christmas, the uncertainty in terms of waiting for a test on certain days in various parts of the country."

It is understood that 25 test centres will open today, Christmas Day, with reduced hours, while 36 test centres will be open on St Stephen's Day, and all are by appointment only.

The HSE told the Irish Mirror: "Testing slots that are held for GPs or close contact referrals may also be released over the course of the day so we advise people to check for testing appointments regularly.

"If anyone gets a positive antigen test result they should self-isolate (stay in your room) and get a PCR test. If there are no test appointments available, they should check back later. Appointments may become available later in the day.

"New advice for close contacts is also now in place since Wednesday, December 22 where all close contacts, who are asymptomatic will be able to request antigen tests."
