Covid Ireland: Over 10,000 cases recorded in children last week as numbers rise 21% in schoolkids

Over 10,000 Covid-19 cases involving children were recorded last week.

The grim statistics were confirmed in the latest report from the HPSC, and show that there was a 21.5% increase in the number of cases in kids aged five to 12.

Those aged between zero and four saw a 5.3% increase, while those aged between 12 and 18 saw a 5.9% rise in Covid cases.

It means that the incidence rates have all risen too, with the rate for five to 12-year-olds being far ahead of any other age group in the country.

A staggering rate of 1341.5 cases per 100,000 people is almost double the national rate of 718.4 cases per 100,000 people.

It comes as the incidence rate continues to fall in the older age groups as Ireland's vaccine rollout continues with the booster programme.

The government and public health officials remain concerned about the Covid situation despite case numbers plateauing in recent weeks.

The Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said that the dual threat posed by the Delta and Omicron variants means that the "trajectory of the disease remains uncertain".

He urged people to avail of their booster vaccines as these are likely to provide protection against severe disease.

The CMO wanted that the incidence of the virus remains high after a further 5,590 cases of Covid-19 were reported on Tuesday.

The imposition of further restrictions in Ireland has not been ruled out after fresh measures took effect this week.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said that for the first time during the pandemic, new rules were being introduced when the epidemiological situation is improving.

His comments come after the Taoiseach said the country needs to be "patient" when it comes to the issue of potential further Covid measures until we know more about the Omicron variant.
