Covid Ireland: Leo Varadkar posts antigen test explainer video as new travel rules introduced

Leo Varadkar has posted a 'how-to' video on antigen tests after the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) recommended their use for international travel.

The tests have caused controversy in the Dáil in recent weeks.

All passengers arriving into the State will need to have a negative antigen or PCR test to gain entry into the country from Friday, Cabinet have agreed.

The rules will not apply to those aged below 11, but there is one key thing to note in that latest advice.

The negative antigen test must be 'professional' - it cannot be one you do at home.

Unvaccinated people will need to have a negative PCR test, but fully vaccinated people can avail of a PCR or antigen test.

The requirement for a negative test applies to all arrivals, including those from Britain.

Mr Varadkar took to social media on Thursday evening to show the public how to administer their own test.

Cabinet is not expected to meet until next Tuesday but there has been some indications that decisions on restrictions and what the Government will agree to, could be taken sooner once they receive the official, finalised advice from NPHET.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly was expecting the recommendations in a letter from Chief Medical Officer, Dr Tony Holohan on Thursday night.
